THE ruling MMD has called on its members to be more vigilant if the party is to remain relevant to the country's democracy.
MMD chairman for commerce and industry, Sebastian Kopulande said in Kabwe on Saturday during the Central Province card renewal exercise that time had come for MMD to operate with renewed vigour.
The exercise was dubbed 'Rebuilding a Strong, Healthy and Working Party'.
Mr Kopulande said the party needed to re-examine itself and its activities to devise new strategies that would make it continue succeeding politically in the country.
"This is a challenge that I humbly pose to the entire MMD membership across our country," he said.
Mr Kopulande said the greatest challenge was that the party had not been effectively marketed at the grassroots level where the voters are.
He said members must work to become active members of their local communities and prove their relevance to the ordinary citizens of the country.
He stressed that the MMD remained the only political party capable of transforming Zambia into the ideal nation that it ought to be, a nation in which every citizen was politically, economically and socially empowered.
Mr Kopulande said it was indisputable that the freedom Zambia enjoyed today was a product of the courage and sweat of the MMD's founding fathers and mothers.
Meanwhile, Kabompo East member of Parliament, Ronald Mukuma has called on MMD members in North-Western Province to rally behind President Levy Mwanawasa and the party to ensure the enhancement of development in the province.
Mr Mukuma said North-Western Province was now on the map of Zambia and that everyone wanted to associate themselves to the province because of the economic success it had recorded under the leadership of Dr Mwanawasa and the MMD.
He was speaking on Saturday in Solwezi when he flagged off the MMD card membership renewal exercise for North-Western Province.
Mr Mukuma, who is Labour and Social Security Minister, said for a long time after independence, the province despite the presence of mineral deposits had been neglected and looked down upon by people who called it a cinderella province.
He said with the MMD under the leadership of Dr Mwanawasa, the province was going through tremendous economic transformation in key sectors such as mining, agriculture and tourism.
Mr Mukuma said currently, more and more mineral deposits such as oil, copper and others were being explored and that this was because of the good policies of the MMD.
"During the two previous administrations, you did see the kind of development taking place now in North-Western. The MMD under President Mwanawasa has managed to bring the province to this position. The MMD has brought dignity to the province," Mr Mukuma said.
He said it was only prudent that people aligned themselves with the MMD because it was the only party which met their needs and aspirations in terms of development in the province.
Mr Mukuma, who urged members not to have a negative approach towards party functions, said petty differences should not be entertained in the party.
And national executive committee (NEC) trustee, Jaffen Mwakalombe said the MMD was the only party with a vision for the country.
Mr Mwakalombe urged party members to explain to the people the good things the MMD Government was doing in the country, noting that those in opposition were there because they had not yet realised what MMD was doing.
MMD spokesperson, Benny Tetamashimba, who called for reconciliation in the party, said there was need to accept and embrace those that had left and were now back in the party.

He said the party could not afford to lose members because it would require much more support for the 2011 elections.
