Nairobi — With just three weeks to go before the qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup finals kick off, there are no signs that Kenya is ready for these fixtures that will also count towards the selection for the African Nations Cup finals in Angola.
At a time when our national team should be in the final stages of preparing for these key games, the Kenya Football Federation is yet to contract a coach, let along secure a budget.
Rather that seal long-term sponsorship partnerships, the indifferent federation officials are sitting with their begging bowls, hoping the Government will dole out what was not even considered in the current Budget.
This is disturbing. As the people charged with running football, the federation's officials must first show commitment before seeking external help.
It's not a secret that corporates are not eager to help owing to KFF's terrible book-keeping record and lack of transparency that is threatening to ruin the game.
It is not too late, though, for the Harambee Stars to be pieced together in time to take on the Herculean challenges ahead. But this will only succeed if the team at the KFF headquarters makes way for a more competent outfit.
We say that the KFF must immediately hold elections to usher in a more transparent, focused and committed team to take us to the 2010 finals in South Africa and Angola.
Claims that there is no money cannot wash because it is the same federation that frustrated efforts by a national team management board to raise funds.
