Arusha's Regional Commissioner, Isidore Shirima has banned all street cinema booths that show pornographic and violent movies.

The unlicensed filthy huts mainly found in the sprawling slum areas of Arusha are infamous by the name of "Vibanda umiza".

The RC last week ordered the Police force to comb all areas to ensure such cinema huts were abolished as they eroded morals of youths who frequent the joints. Despite laws against pornography, it is common to find a hard core porn movie being shown to school kids in the slums in broad daylight. All what the movie operator wants is entrance fee of Tsh. 100 per head.

The Regional Commissioner said those pictures would lead to total moral decay if the "illicit trade" was left unchecked.

But it is not the first time that a regional head has spoken about the stalls. Predecessorsof Mr. Shirima invariably spoke against the cinema stalls and imposed a ban on them but they are still thriving and showing whatever porn movies on the market. Infact, many of them put life-size billboards in public places to attract viewers.

Shirima also ordered the police force to work hard and stop all forms of gambling in Arusha as the practice was tantamount to stealing from the innocent "wananchi".
