A Hardware shop at Kandeya Shopping Centre in Mount Darwin belonging to a Zanu-PF supporter Mrs Sarah Mudzengerere was on Wednesday petrol-bombed by suspected MDC-T thugs.
Mrs Mudzengerere is the Deputy Minister of Youth and Employment Creation and Member of Parliament for the area Cde Saviour Kasukuwere's sister.
Mashonaland Central police confirmed that they had received the report and that investigations were in progress.
They said the incident occurred between 11pm and midnight on Wednesday this week. Ms Roselyn Dzumbunu, who was sleeping in the shop at the time of the attack, said she heard three blasts before a big fire that engulfed the shop was ignited.
"I was sleeping in one of the rooms when I heard three heavy blasts coming from the shop. I went to investigate but was repelled by a thick smoke. I then saw fire coming from the shop. I escaped through the back door," she said.
Ms Dzumbunu said she was forced to climb over a fence to seek help from people who were drinking at a nearby bar.
"With the help of these people, we managed to put out the fire using sand and water before informing the police.
"Police who attended the incident took the objects that looked like 'butternuts' identified by some of the people at the scene as grenades," she said.
Property and hardware goods that include adhesives, tyres, windowpanes, paints and files were destroyed.
Mrs Mudzengerere said she was disturbed by the attack but would leave everything in the hands of the God who had blessed her with the shop.
The attack comes days after suspected opposition activists torched eight homes in Madziva in the same province.
|
The houses were burnt down on Monday in Dambaza Village, Madziva, about 40 km from Bindura. The attacks were similar to those allegedly perpetrated by a group of opposition activists in Mayo, Headlands, last month.
