Addis Ababa — Government urbanization projects in the country are hit by a severe scarcity of the much-needed cement and other construction materials, the Ministry of Works and Urban Development said on Wednesday.

The Ministry said it was now in a position where it was unable to pursue the construction projects as set is its five-year plan, Minister Kassu Illala told the House of Parliament while presenting the ministry's nine-month activity/performance report.

He said however that the ministry managed to implement 61,000 houses which he said where at their final stages.

He said the project covering all regions in the country created over 93,000 job opportunities altogether.

Minister Kassu said road construction projects and maintenance and upgrading projects were carried out successfully as planed during the last nine months where local and foreign construction companies took part.

Kassu said meanwhile that the government paid out over 18 billion birr in compensation to house holds who had to be displaced as a result of the urbanization project in the capital including farmers in some regions.

The House approved a 1.7 billion birr for the ministry to finalize unfinished projects and initiate new ones.
