Addis Abeba — A high-level international conference held last week discussed efforts that have to be made to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), The Daily Monitor has learnt.
The conference held in Paris, France was attended by Health Ministers from around the world following an invitation by French Minister of Health, Bernard Kouchner.
The conference was themed: "Universal Health Coverage; Who should pay?" according to media reports.
Ethiopia was represented at the conference by Dr.Medhin Zewdu Special Advisor and Head of Office of the Minister of Health Dr.Teodros Adhanom.
She said the conference focused on the role that the international community has made in strengthening health systems to eradicate poverty and disease as well as attaining the MDGs.
It sought to identify new perspectives to guarantee long-term funding to ensure sustainability of health systems, Dr Medhin Zewdu added.
The MDGs are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges.
They include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, increasing education, promoting gender equality, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV and AIDS among others.
Ethiopia is well on track to meet the MDGs on health sector, Public Relations Head of the Ministry of Health Ahmed Imano told The Daily Monitor.
Sooth African minister of Health Tshabalala-Msimang who is also the Chairperson of the African Union of Ministers of Health highlighted the need for developed countries to honour their commitments on development assistance to Africa and other developing countries, according to BuaNews.
