The European Commission Delegation to Ethiopia on Thursday marked Europe Day at the EU delegation office in Addis Ababa.

Speaking a joint press conference in connection to the occasion along with French Ambassador to Ethiopia Stephen Gompertz and Czech Ambassador to Ethiopia Dobias Zednek Dobias, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Ethiopia Ambassador Dino Sinigallia said Europe Day was always a special day.

Czech Republic, will take over the EU presidency from France as of mid of 2009.

"At the time of the founding of the EU, no one would have believed that this project that started with only six countries would become a world model for peace and prosperity," he said.

Ambassador Stephen Gompertz said: "We are fascinated to be part of EU. In EU some countries are more advanced and the other less advanced, however, we are in one interest and vision with respecting each countries culture, language, value and sovereignty."

European Union is a strategic partner for countries around the world on issues as varied as international terrorism, climate change, HIV, and resolving the world's most entrenched conflicts.

EU also works to promote the respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Today, the European Union is a political and economic project bringing together 27 countries and over 490 million people.

Travel across Europe is increasingly passport-free and the majority of its citizens share a single currency-EURO.
