Sometime in April 1998, my mother and brother travelled to Tanzania for a week. Since the only other person I could comfortably stay with was Pamela, my sister at university, I went to her room. That evening Pamela and her friends were escorting their colleague to the airport. I accompanied them.
We first had fellowship and tea. I felt out of place because I was the only one who wasn't a born-again christian. They sang songs I had never heard. Somewhere in my evil mind lingered the thoughts of what I would miss if I became born-again.
Someone preached about the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21). He described what this new city would be like. I imagined myself, my family and my newfound friends being pampered at the feet of Jesus because we had been declared righteous. The temptation to become born-again was strong, but the devil kept telling me I would lead a sad life if I followed Jesus. I imagined myself burning in hell for rejectinging Jesus. I was puzzled.
At the same time I had great admiration for Pamela and her friends because they were happy girls. Nothing seemed to be missing in their lives. Why couldn't I join their league too and be part of this wonderful and everlasting life? I decided to postpone the decision.
When my mother and brother returned from Tanzania, the entire family went to Masaka for Easter. Whenever Pamela had time, she would preach to me. She reminded me of the sermon on the New Jerusalem. I decided to cast my burdens onto Jesus. I felt as if a heavy load had just been lifted off my shoulders. Tears of joy rolled down my face. I wondered why it had taken me so long to allow Jesus into my life.

The road has not been smooth. Just like the Bible says, the road to eternal life is narrow and difficult to travel. The devil has been in the vicinity since I was snatched away from him. He has tried to win me back, but I have overcome him. The road I am treading now is better than the one I had become accustomed to.
