BOARDING schools that do not have emergency exits in dormitories will not open next term, state minister for relief and disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru has said.

"All schools and institutions of higher learning with boarding wings, must adopt architectural plans that provide for entrance and exit doors."

Ecweru noted that the schools had kept the old house designs that had only one door. "This is dangerous in case of disaster because the learners will find it difficult to flee to safety."

On April 14, about 20 pupils of Budo Junior School died in a fire that gutted their dormitory. The minister was last week presiding over the national celebrations of the Uganda Red Cross Society at King George Stadium in Tororo town.

The Government, Ecweru noted, would train students and youth on disaster management. The chairman of the Red Cross central governing board, Tom Buruku, said they were shifting policy from responding to disaster to disaster prevention.

He cited a sh3b housing project in Teso for the people who were hit by floods last year. The houses have stronger foundations.
