THE Police have deployed heavily at the Bujagali hydropower construction site near Jinja to prevent theft and vandalism of materials and equipment.
"The Inspector General of Police (Kale Kayihura) visited the site last week to assess the situation," said Judith Nabakooba, the acting Police spokesperson.
"The CID, crime intelligence, community affairs and general-duty officers have been deployed." She added that a permanent command post had been set up to check the rampant theft.
The southeastern regional police chief, Christopher Kubai, explained that officers from the mobile and marine units were also taken to the site.
"We have sent two canoes to patrol the part of River Nile which thieves reportedly use to transport smuggled fuel, while the mobile Police patrols nearby areas using vehicles and on foot," he said.
The Police, Kubai observed, had launched operations in neighbouring villages and trading centres in search of stolen fuel and construction materials.
Two weeks ago, The New Vision highlighted massive theft at the Bujagali site. The article stated that the vices were threatening to delay the project that is expected to relieve the country of the current acute power shortage.
President Yoweri Museveni later directed Maj. Gen Kayihura to provide sufficient security at the site.
The resident project engineer, John Lockwood, welcomed the deployment
"It is good for our progress. The place is quiet and work is progressing well.
Inside and outside the gate, there is heavy deployment. I am satisfied. This will save the project."

He thanked The New Vision for the exposure.
