AN international charity has started a programme to revive coffee and maize production in 20 districts. The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) said it would help farmers grow, market and add value to the crops to alleviate poverty.

The agency's Sarah Tibaijukira Kayanga said coffee production had gone down from 1996 to 2006. In 1996, Uganda produced four million bags of coffee but in 2006, only 2.7 million bags were produced, Kayanga told stakeholders in the coffee industry from Kibaale district at Kibaale Hotel.

The declining coffee production, she added, implied reduced household income, leading to increased poverty levels.

Kayanga said through the Agricultural Sector Programme Support, the agency would support agricultural research and advisory services, agribusiness development and the restoration of agricultural livelihood in northern Uganda.

In western Uganda, the project is being implemented in Kibaale, Kamwenge, Ntungamo, Kanungu and Kabale districts.

Kayanga said the project aimed at having Uganda produce at least eight million bags by 2015.

The Kibaale district chairman, George William Namyaka, urged the locals to grow coffee to increase their household income.
