Kampala

SEVERAL parts of Kampala City have been hit by floods triggered by heavy rains that lasted three hours.

The biggest slums in the city are the most affected areas. They include Bwaise, Kalerwe and Katanga.

In the city centre, huge volumes of water were noticed at Wampewo roundabout, around Nakivubo Blue primary school and in Kyambogo. The rains also caused heavy traffic jams.

Enterprising businessmen took advantage of the rains to make money by selling umbrellas at 5, 000 shillings up from 3, 500 shillings.

Kawempe division chairman Nasser Takuba said the dumping of garbage into the water channels was responsible for the persistent flooding in the area.

Takuba also blamed the flooding on the small culverts that the constructors of the 21km Northern Bypass have installed along the drainage channels in the division.

"My residents, especially in Kalerwe are suffering every time it rains. There is nothing we can do as the division unless the Bypass constructors do something.

"The contractors are supposed to clean up the channels after completing construction of the bypass. They are all clogged, which interrupts the flow of water, especially whenever it rains," Takuba observed.

About the sh15b project that the World Bank pledged to finance for the enlargement of the Bwaise-Lubigi water channel, Takuba said the issue was still in parliament.
