Maputo

The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) has expressed an interest in rehabilitating Maputo's defences against coastal erosion, reports Monday's issue of the Maputo daily paper "Noticias".

The coastal barrier against encroachment by the sea is seriously degraded for a stretch of 13 kilometres, and the cost of rehabilitation is estimated at 18 million US dollars.

The general director of BADEA, Abdelaziz Khelef, who is on a working visit to Mozambique, visited the Maputo coastal zone on Sunday, accompanied by the Mayor of the city, Eneas Comiche, who informed him of progress on rehabilitation of the city's roads and the storm water drainage system. This work is being financed by BADEA and the OPEC Fund to the tune of 22 million dollars.

Khelef told reporters BADEA is interested in the coastal defence project - indeed the bank assisted in its design. "We expect that we will take part in rehabilitating the coastal barrier, given its importance in protecting the coast road", he said. "It's our task to support initiatives that improve economic and social conditions in African countries".

Anyone who drives along the coast road from central Maputo to the neighbourhoods of Triunfo and Costa do Sol can see how the sea is already nibbling at the road, and how the roots of trees have been completely exposed.

The City Council's top priority is the Costa do Sol end of the road. Comiche said that eight breakwaters must be built here to reduce the impact of the waves on the coastal barrier. He added that while the Council is negotiating the 18 million dollars required, it will use 20 million meticais (about 825,000 US dollars) a year in localized, emergency repairs to the defences.
