Mozambique: Interior Ministry Wants More Professional Police

12 May 2008

Maputo — Mozambican Interior Minister Jose Pacheco on Monday declared that his ministry wishes to create a more professional police force, but this will require heavy investment in training, in equipment and in police infrastructures.

Speaking to reports at the start of a week of commemorations of the 33rd anniversary of the creation of the Mozambican police force (PRM), Pacheco said "We know we must be patient. We are gradually approaching our partners, asking them to respond to these needs, both through the state budget and through other means".

He added that a "continual recycling" of police officers is taking place, and that the curriculum used in police schools is being overhauled.

The major equipment challenge, the Minister added, is to computerize the police communications, and ensure that the entire police force is on-line. In terms of border control, the police unit at Ressano Garcia, the main border post with South Africa. is already on-line, and Pacheco hoped to extend this to other border units in the near future.

Pacheco also claimed that cases of corruption involved policemen are "severely dealt with" by his Ministry.
