Nigeria: Rep Faults Summons On Obasanjo

Chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Environment, Hon. Duro Faseyi, has faulted the Hon. Ndudi Elumelu-led committee for summoning former President Olusegun Obasanjo in respect of the on-going probe of the nation's power sector.
Hon. Faseyi, who represents Ekiti North 11 Federal Constituency in the House, categorically declared that the Power committee, by inviting former President Obasanjo, has gone beyond the mandate given to it by the House.
The lawmaker pointed out that the principal officers of the House were not in support of the summon by the committee and that the committee acted on its own.
The committee had last week Tuesday summoned Obasanjo and his vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to appear before it today to explain their
roles in the various power projects executed between 1999 and 2007.
While berating the chairman and members of the committee for the action, Faseyi in a press statement in Abuja at the weekend, said "the committee has gone beyond its mandate. It does not have the backing of the principal officers of the House to summon Obasanjo. Nobody gave them the mandate.
"It is an act of disrespect for someone of Obasanjo's status to be summoned as the committee has done. He has served this country meritoriously more than any other past leader in the country.
"Is Obasanjo a contractor? Was he the one that awarded the contracts for the various power projects under investigation? He is not a contractor. There are some people who were saddled with that responsibility.
Those are the people that should be summoned not Obasanjo", Hon. Faseyi declared.
The federal legislator, who advised the committee to avoid being sentimental in the course of carrying out the investigation, maintained that former President Obasanjo "is the best leader in the country so far considering his various achievement while in office".
Continuing, Hon. Faseyi said, "Obasanjo was the messiah who saved this country from disintegration in 1999 when he came into office.
Virtually everything was at verge of collapsing when he assumed office as president in 1999. Having recorded all those achievements, he surely deserves commendation and not condemnation".
The legislator vowed that he and others who believed so much in Obasanjo will never allowed him to be rubbished for whatever reason.

According to him, "how many times have other past leaders in the country been summoned by the committees of the National Assembly to come and account for their actions or inactions? Why should the case of Obasanjo been different? We won't allow him to be rubbished".
This is the ONLY TRUE AND SENSIBLE STATEMENT that has been made so far by any politician in the country since President Obasanjo left office. THERE IS NO IOTA OF DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT OVER 90% OF THE PRESENT POLITICIANS ARE SO TRANSPARENTLY TRIBALISTIC THAT IT MAKES SOME OF US OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY ASHAMED OF THEIR CORRUPT AND RAW BEHAVIOUR.
