The Rector of the Yaounde I University, Dr. Dorothy Njeuma, has said orientation is the heart of all educative processes that permits effectiveness, efficiency and credibility.
It is because of this role that a two-day forum from April 8-9 was organised for academic and professional orientation at the Amphitheatre 700 of the Yaounde I University.Njeuma said the objective of the Orientation Days is to sensitise and inform secondary and university students as well as the public on the training offered in the different faculties, professional schools and specialised structures.
She said orientation also helps students to choose between the diverse training disciplines in view of their aspirations and the exigencies of envisaged disciplines. The Rector said it puts in place the diverse components of the university community in relation with the socio-professional world to develop a partnership that helps the student to better evaluate his or her line of training, aspirations and professional choice, in face with the societal and technological changes.
The Rector said the 11th edition of the Orientation Days dubbed; "LMD System: Towards a New University Dynamics and Professionalisation" is appropriate because this academic year started with the system and it justifies the new context of changes that touches deeply on national, regional and continental higher education.
She indicated that this system was born in Europe but has received an international vocation. Considering its advantages, the heads of state of Central Africa met in Libreville, in the course of the 2005 CEMAC Summit and accorded to the February 11 Declaration putting in place LMD CEMAC (Licence -Master- Doctorat), calling on member states to adhere to the system.
To the heads of state, the system is a means of solving the economic expectations and unemployment problems crippling the region. They envisaged that since the system is directed towards solving unemployment, the problem of numerous graduates that roam the streets jobless would be solved.
The Technical Assistant of the French Cooperation in the Ministry of Higher Education in Charge of Professionalisation Questions, Bernard Bres, in his presentation "Professionalisation: An advantage of the LMD System" explained that the system helps to improve on the economic level of a country.
Since the system institutes students to be professional viable, he said, it helps to integrate them in to the economy. He said the system doesn't just provide formal training but builds skills that help students to be qualified for enterprises.
Closing the ceremony, the Director of Academic Affair and Cooperation, Professor Daniel Abwa, appreciated Bres' presentation and the round table entitled "University Environment and LMD System" that highlighted pertinent issues on this year's theme of Orientation Days.
He said following international changes on higher education, it was important for the university to organise the Orientation Days and diagnose what the LMD offers in order to evaluate the successes of the new system. He said the reflection forum provided the riches of LMD that would help our higher education institutions towards the needs of our economies.

In addition, he said the exhibition composed of the various disciplines of higher education and enterprises, provided information, communication, orientation and advice that made the event successful.
