Several allegations of corruption, favouritism, incompetence, incest and adultery have been heaped on Olusegun Obasanjo since he was forced to give up power nearly one year ago. The most touching came from revelations made at the House of Representatives panel attempting to unravel the mystery behind some $16 billion investments in the power sector that have delivered nothing but darkness for Nigerians. If anyone deserves the right to fair hearing, it is a much-maligned former leader like Obasanjo.
It is therefore proper that the House panel has extended this right to the former president by inviting him to appear before it today. But while everybody else is waiting to hear Obasanjo's defence, a character like Muraina Ajibola does not see the invitation as fair but as "parliamentary blunder" and lack of respect for a former president.
The lawmakers should not listen to ill-informed persons who would stop at nothing to protect their godfathers. Only lawless people seeking to frustrate the Ndudi Elumelu-led committee would plead that "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others". Nobody is above the law.
