THE list of the nominees for this year's Victoria Gospel Music Awards (VIGA) was recently released by the Awards' chief executive efficer, Prince Nicholas Nnyombi.
The nominees were selected by a panel of 15 judges. The individual panelists picked four names for each of the competitive categories. The names were then grouped in their respective categories.
Four names were then placed in each category in consideration of the number of times they were selected.
An impressive audience of Gospel music lovers attended the colouful function, which took place at Christian Theatre, Kampala.
Nnyombi commended Ugandans for supporting Gospel artistes.
He said the VIGA Awards project, which was inaugurated last year to promote Gospel music excellence, had achieved tremendous progress.
The number of Gospel artistes that registered for the awards had doubled from 256 to 547. Nnyombi requested the artistes to do more to improve the quality of their music. He said the nominations committee had observed serious problems, among which was the fact that many artistes do not know the category of their music.
Citing the example of secular artiste Henry Tigan, who last year made a speedy rise to fame, Nnyombi advised the Gospel artistes to get for themselves personal managers or promoters. He also advised the artistes to observe the awards' deadlines before thanking all the organisations and individuals involved for contributing significantly to the VIGA Awards project.
At the same function, the programme controller of Capital Radio Group, Joel Isabirye, launched the VIGA Magazine, which will be published every three months.
Many of the nominated artistes attended the function and staged performances to charm their fans.

The awards ceremony will be held in June and winners will be presented to the public in a Gospel music concert at Nakivubo Stadium.
