UGANDA has not met her European Union quota of supplying 60,000 metric tonnes of frozen and chilled fish fillets annually, a top official disclosed last week.
Prosie Kikabi, the Uganda Investment Authority investment executive, attributed the failure to the limited fishing on the lakes and the illegal export of immature fish to the regional markets.
"The sector is also riddled with high investment costs exacerbated by inadequate capital due to lack of access to finance and lack of technical knowledge on aquaculture husbandry," Kikabi said during a fish farmers symposium at the Uganda Manufacturers Association Conference Hall recently.
She said the sector also lacked logistical support for extension officers.
