Kampala — IN the ongoing crack down on vehicles in poor mechanical condition, the Police have impounded 580 cars in Kampala Extra region.

The vehicles that were seized last week, have been parked at the Central Police Station and Police stations in Katwe, Kawempe, Old Kampala, Wandegeya, Jinja Road and Kira Road.

According to the spokesman for Kampala Extra, Simeo Nsubuga, eight people died in the 176 road accidents registered in the city last week.

"We have not stopped. We shall intensify our crackdown on vehicles and drivers not supposed to be on the road. The rate at which people are dying is alarming," he said yesterday during the weekly briefing at the Central Police Station.

Nsubuga added that the eight, whose identities had not yet been established, were five pedestrians, two motorcyclists and a passenger.

In the operation, he stated, 47 drivers were arrested, while 17 were charged in court.

"We also raised sh30.6m from fines paid by errant motorists. They did not have driving permits, third-party insurance, drove vehicles in poor mechanical shape and others were found driving while talking on phone."

In a related development, a Makerere University first-year student of law, Katumusime Bagenda, has been arrested for allegedly forging driving permits.

Bagenda, who was paraded before the press, was found with 10 forged driving permits and a laptop, according to Nsubuga.

Another suspect, Meldric Samchez Pharell, who is suspected to have conned his girlfriend (names withheld) of sh4.9m, was also paraded.

"Meldric, a resident of Kanyanya, stole his girlfriend's identity card and bank statement and used them to withdraw money from the Barclays Bank branch on Kampala Road," Nsubuga said.
