Nairobi — Despite the current difficult condition of the Karen Country Club course, Karanja Macharia still returned an impressive score to emerge the overall winner of this year's Eagle Africa Insurance Brokers Corporate Golf tournament.
Playing off handicap 27 Macharia set for his victorious trip with a brilliant 23 points in the first nine and though slipped back to 18 at the back nine his aggregate of 41 was still a point better than lady golfer Jackie Ayton who started with 16 but fired an excellent 24 at the back nine to bring her total to 40 points.
She however won the runners up prize after beating the handicap 10 Peter Kebati on countback. Kebati posted 19 and 21 to also wind up with 40 while finishing fourth in the event which attracted a field of 120 players was another Karen lady golfer Jane Maitha with 39 points but again after a countback with Muthaiga's Njoroge Mbuchucha on countback.
Former Limuru captain George Staussi walked away with the first nine award after returning 22 points while James Mugambi was the second nine winner on 23 points.
Rightfully claim prize
The subsidiary prizes such as longest drive for men and women went to Rishi Shah and Geeta Dhall and Dinesh Shah claimed the nearest to pin prize.
Winning the staff prize with a score of 41 made up of 25 and 16 was Herbert Ochili. The going however proved tough for Abraham Maghas who could only score 13 points to rightfully go home with the Piga Mingi prize. But what a day it was for Ken Anunda.
Though the 28 handicapper was not among the prize winners, his name was mentioned for firing in an eagle of two club at the par four-first hole.Muthaiga; Japh Olende shot gross 81 for an excellent nett 63 to emerge the overall winner of the Development Bank Golf Day tournament.
Handicap six Martin Mwangi won the gross title with after firing one over par 72. Handicap six Peter Mwindi posted gross 78 for nett 66 to claim the men's prize ahead of Patrick Kamani with 67. Finishing third was George Kahira on 68 after beating Francis Irungu on and the ladies prize went to Shella Bhanji with nett 70.
Won the Staff prize
She won by two shots from Dianne O'Connor who in turn beat Susan Kanyora on countback for Kanyora to finish third. Karen's Sarah Otolo was the guest winner with nett 70 after beating R. Nyerere on countback and in third place was Royal's Jack Okuku with 71.
