First Bank yesterday at the Lagos University Sports Club defeated Wema Bank 2-0 to secure a semi final passage at the on going CBN Cup.

Port Harcourt based micro-finance outfit McWjef also created on of the biggest upset of the tournament by beating Oceanic Bank 2-1 in the second quarter final match played at the Union Bank Sports Club, Surulere.

The other quarter finals fixtures were played in Kaduna and Minna respectively. Victory for the First Bank underlined the rich vein of form by the team in the first round where they won all three matches. However, defeat was a huge setback for Wema whose team manager Ransome Femi Sanni before the match said they would be pleased with just reaching the semi final. Wema had last Friday forced FCMB to a 2-2 draw to finish as the second best team in Group A behind Oceanic, while McWJef had earned the rights to progress along First Bank after it mauled Afribank 3-0 in its last group match on Friday.

The CBN Cup competition started on May 4. The tournament which is open to banking and other financial institutions is aimed at promoting friendship and fitness among the industry workers.
