Nigeria: 'Area Boys' Go On Rampage in Sokoto

More than eleveen vehicles yesterday were vandalised by "Area Boys" at Gudu, Tangaza Local Government area of Sokoto State in a clash between the state chapter of the Democratic Peoples' Party (DPP) and People Democratic Party (PDP)campaign,while a female supporter of DPP also sustained a serious injuries.

Also, three vehicles were burnt to ashes during the clash which also left the back glass of an NTA Sokoto Network Center 14 seater Toyota Hiace bus smashed.

It will be recalled that political parties and security agents have been holding series of meetings in the state warning against violence act or fomenting trouble, urging politicians in the state to remain peaceful and conduct their politicking particularly on campaign periods orderly.

Two of the DPP supporters sustained deep cuts in the head and other parts of their bodies following attacks by rival PDP supporters along Gudu-Tangaza road, shortly after the campaign train of Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi along with DPP's presidential candidate in 2007 general elections, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa set-off for Tangaza from Gudu where the rally was flagged off.

The victims of the attack were however given first aid attention before rushing them to the nearest medical center in Tangaza local government for further treatment.

With the quick intervention of the police which strategically positoned it men at flash points, the situation was immediately brought under control even as no arrest was made as suspected supporters of both parties flee the scene.

Speaking in Gudu, Tangaza and Binji respectively, DPP presidential candidate and former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa told party supporters that he was in politics to encourage democratic ideals and self empowerment for all and not to castigate or cause confusion in the society where he has responsibilities to meet in the interest of the state.

According to Bafarawa, politicians in the state should not dwell on factual wrongs for worldly gains but encourage unity and peaceful co-existence among people in the state and beyond. "I am not going to play politics of castigation. I believe in the politics of opinion, interest and freedom so as to allow even contribution and human right ideals with respect for the rule of law and democratic structures with mandate of the electorate", he added
