A Bauchi-based international non-governmental organisation, Challenge Your Disability Initiative (CYDI), has commended the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) for conducting a hitch-free and transparent local government election in the state.

Making the commendation during a monitoring exercise of the Saturday, May 10 councils election in the state, founder of the organisation and wife of the state governor, Hajiya Hauwa Biodun Yuguda, revealed that from her personal assessment of the conduct of the election, SIEC deserved commendation for providing the necessary materials on time and at the designated polling units without delay. "All materials were delivered as we inspected and the personnel recruited for the exercise were polite and determined to conduct the election in accordance to the rules. Elections started almost at the same time throughout the state and was peaceful without a single arrest or report of any disturbance", she said.

According to her, even though some of the parties opted out of the election for reasons best known to them, the conduct of the election was the best ever recorded in the history of the state and opined that it should be emulated by other states for democracy to thrive and attain maturity. She added that, "the state government provided a level playing field for all parties to contest, the governor even made personal donation of vehicles to the parties as his contribution to their survival and ease their operations. In fact, Bauchi State is today the symbol of democracy in Nigeria where all politicians, despite sharp differences, are encouraged to participate in the system without frustration".
