Human Rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), yesterday expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their unique celebration of his 70th birthday, even in his absence.

Fawehinmi, in a statement issued in Lagos, also thanked Nigerians for their prayers for his quick recovery.

"I specially appreciate the wonderful role played by the media - both the print and the electronic - for their support through the publication of various tributes, messages, editorials, articles and lectures.

"With the remaining time left for me in the world, I will treasure these unusual, wonderful and unprecedented outpouring of love, support and kindness from my fellow countrymen and women.

"I arrived on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from London where I had been receiving medical treatment for lung cancer.

"I have been given a medically advised break in my treatment. Hence, my stay in the country is going to be temporary and short before I go back", he stated.

"I will continue to battle this deadly disease of lung cancer despite the pain and pangs it entails, with determination and courage that I can muster".

Fawehinmi, however, said that he believed that with the prayers and support of Nigerians and God's intervention, the best would be achieved. (NAN)
