At last Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed an agreement to end tension along their common border.
The tension resulted from the discovery, some weeks ago, of an oil field in the area. The DRC army is said to have occupied the area in West Nile and moved its border post four kilometers inside Uganda.
In his capacity as the African Union (AU) chairman, and more so as a good neighbour to both countries, President Jakaya Kikwete made the wise decision of reconciling them.
The action resulted in both countries coming to a round table and agreeing to sign the peace pact. We hail his decision to bring the two countries to a discussion that resulted in the peace pact.
More importantly, we hail the two countries for heeding President Kikwete's move to make peace between them.
So much blood of the people of Africa has been spilt that we shudder to see more of it being lost any longer. African countries should now concentrate on making, rather than breaking, peace among them.
For it is only through peace that the development and unity of African states will be achieved, as aspired by the AU.
