The United Nations Special Envoy to Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah has expressed his optimism and hope at the willingness of the Somali leaders to put their country and the safety of the Somali people as a top priority.
The Special Envoy was speaking after the official opening ceremony of the Somali peace talks held at the Le Palais du Peuple (the People's Palace) in Djibouti. The special envoy's statements were contained in a press release by the United Nations Political Office for Somalia.
The Special Representative further expressed his happiness at the amount of goodwill and support he had received from the Somali Diaspora for the peace discussions and expressed his optimism that they would continue to show the kind of support witnessed so far to facilitate a peaceful settlement of the crisis the country is in.
"Many, especially young people, told me that this is a new and important first step towards stability in their own country", said the SRSG.
Mr. Ould-Abdallah further reminded Somalis that they must appreciate that there is no peace or stability without compromise, justice and forgiveness.
The ceremony was addressed by the Special Representative, representatives from the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the European Union. Other addresses came from representatives of the Transitional Federal Government and the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia and the Djibouti Minister for Muslim Affairs.
While calling on the international community to be patient with Somalia, the Envoy urged the Somali people to put all their efforts in ensuring that the conflict is resolved.
"I call on them to think of the terrible political, security and humanitarian crisis in their country and put all their efforts into resolving it", he urged.

He thanked the Djibouti government and its people for their hospitality and help in the organization of the discussions.
