A South Africa expedition yesterday donated 700 mosquito nets to women and children at Tumbi Special Hospital in Cost Region.

The Africa Outside Edge trip is sponsored by British Airways.

The Expedition leader, Mr Kingsley Holtage, said 100,000 nets worth Sh800 million would be distributed to women and children in various parts of Tanzania to protect them against malaria.

He said they had been going to 33 countries in sub-Sahara Africa to distribute nets to women and children under five years old.

"We have targeted women and children since are the ones who are being affected more by malaria," he said.

"Tanzania is doing quite well in reducing this disease compared with other countries and if the same efforts are applied then by 2010 then there will be a great reduction in malaria."

Tumbi Hospital medical officer in charge Koheleth Winani said malaria had been causing most deaths in the hospital.

"This donation has come at the time we needed it most since in this hospital malaria has been causing most deaths than other diseases," Dr Winani said.
