Cape Town has clinched an "Oscar" award for its efforts towards being known as Africa's leading destination.
The city received this honour during the prestigious World Travel Awards held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban on Monday.
Globally the awards are considered the Oscars of the travel industry.
The award recognises the tireless work of a team, striving towards making Cape Town a top global travel destination, Executive Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, Grant Haskin said on accepting the award.
He said the city had also been able to present superb products in a variety of perspectives and in a responsible manner, producing tourist ambassadors the world over.
The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the enormous achievements in all sectors of the global travel industry.
Travel professionals and their clients regard the awards as the best endorsement that any travel product could receive.
According to Mr Haskin, the award is one of the major legacies the 2010 FIFA World Cup will leave behind.
He said the award is also proof that Cape Town was ready, willing and able to produce an excellent world cup.
The province's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Social Development and Tourism, Simon Grindrod shares the same sentiments.
"This award further consolidates the position of Cape Town as a world-class tourist destination," Mr Grindrod said, adding that the province's local hospitality industry had worked hard to provide tourists with excellent products and services.
The province was judged on a range of business dynamics, notably an understanding of visitors' needs.
According to the City's Executive Director for Economic Social Development and Tourism, Mansoor Mohamed the award will help Cape Town to become more globally competitive as a tourism destination.
He boosted that Cape Town has built and maintained excellent tourism infrastructure and remarkable experiences.
"We are constantly improving our environmental assets, and building skills and improving opportunities in our tourism sector. Our visitor safety record is among the best in the world," he said.

It is the second most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg.
