Namibia: Namoloh to Act As NYC Secretary General

John Ekongo

13 May 2008

Windhoek — The National Youth Council national executive committee on Saturday endorsed Julius Namoloh as acting secretary general.

The last National Youth Council secretary general was Juliet Kavetuna, who has joined Parliament. Namoloh will steer the ship for the next two weeks only, until a Representative Council meeting scheduled for the weekend of May 23.

It is widely believed that at the meeting candidates vying for the position will officially be announced for all Representative Council members to decide on the best candidate. As it stands Mandela Kapere and Julius Namoloh are said to be favourites. Another candidate Veiko Nekundi is alleged to have withdrawn from the race. However, upon enquiry Nekundi dismissed the allegations as rumours.

"Those are rumours. I don't know where you got that. I am still in the running and am just awaiting endorsement by the SPYL," said Nekundi. A source in the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) Youth League yesterday threw weight behind the proposed candidature of Algerian-based youth activist Kapere, saying it prefers a person who has had closer links with the youth body rather than an outsider. Kapere and Namoloh are long-serving members of the National Youth Council executive committee, while Nekundi is only a central committee member and national executive committee member of the Swapo Party Youth League. Meanwhile, another candidate Gomotsang Mokaleng Kuzeeko of the Ikopeleng Youth Association who was a challenger to Kavetuna during the last General Youth Assembly in 2005 plans to stand.

Whoever gets elected after the Representative Council will only act until the General Youth Assembly, which is scheduled to take place immediately after the new National Youth Council Bill is tabled by Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture Minister, Willem Konjore.

The youth ministry said earlier that the Bill might be gazetted in August this year. The General Youth Assembly was expected to meet in December next year, but has since been placed on hold to await the tabling of the Bill.
