The 11th edition of the University Academic Orientation and Professionalisation Days of the University of Yaounde 1 ended in Yaounde last Friday. Organised by the University of Yaounde 1, the event brought together personalities of public and private administrations as well as business persons. The theme for the 2008 edition was: "The BMD system : towards the new University Dynamics and Professionalisation". Activities organised during the orientation days included : exhibitions, information and orientation in workshops, visit to different institutions and specialised centres, etc.

The Bachelors-Masters -Doctorate System, known in French as the LMD (License Master Doctorat) system, is a new approach to teaching and learning in higher education put in place following prescriptions by Heads of States of CEMAC countries during a CEMAC summit in Libreville in 2005. The purpose was to give a new impetus to higher education in the African continent in order to respond to the needs of the economic sector in terms of employment and creation. The objectives of the LMD system are to ensure the improvement and the modernisation of pedagogy and organise highly performant and flexible training courses that will gradually favour the student's orientation.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Rector of the University of Yaounde 1, Dr Mrs Dorothy Limunga Njeuma, said the wish of the University is that these orientation days should serve as a platform where secondary and high school students, including university students and the general public, as well as partners, could have an idea of the orientation days. Also, the BMD system ties with the new system of University Governance, which promotes self financing of academic activities wherein lecturers come up with innovative activities that will better demonstrate their talents. The Rector called on the students to benefit from the different activities organised during the orientation days which will enable them carry out their academic and professional projects.
