GIVE all your time to patients to save lives, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Daudi Migereko, has told medical workers. "When patients come to hospital, they should be well attended to, the doctors, nurses and drugs must be there at all times."

"It is disheartening to find that health workers spare little time on duty yet many people fall sick each and every day.

"The spirit of working long hours is still needed to save lives." However, the minister urged residents to avoid diseases by maintaining hygiene and leading healthy lifestyles.

Migereko was last week speaking after handing over medical supplies and equipment to Jinja regional Hospital to the medical superintendent, Dr. Benon Wanume.

The items, worth sh19m, were donated by MedShare International through the Uganda-America Development Coalition, an umbrella charity organisation of Ugandans living in the US.

Migereko, who is also the MP for Butembe in Jinja, thanked development partners for supplementing government efforts in service delivery.

"The Government welcomes organisations that are contributing towards improving the socio-economic well-being of the people," he said.

"We are constrained by limited resources yet the list of items required is endless. So when we get a supporting hand, we appreciate a lot."

Medical workers should perform their duties diligently with love, care and compassion, Migereko counselled.

He asked the hospital management to jealously guard the equipment against theft.

"It is only when you end up in hospital that you will fully appreciate the essence of such donations.

So use the supplies well to improve the delivery of health services to the patients."

The country representative of the coalition, Dr. Stephen Banonya, said two containers of medical supplies were sent to St. Joseph's Hospital in Kitgum and another to Nkozi, adding that many would come.

"We shall continue supporting Jinja Hospital with provision of care for the cancer patients."
