THE Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Faith Mwondha, has ordered the Ministry of Education to cancel government scholarships for nine university students.
In a report, Mwondha said the students were fraudulently benefiting from the Nakaseke district quota sponsorship because they do not hail from the area.
The report said they were recommended by their former teacher, Ahmed Ndawula, who connived with the local leaders.
The students, who did their A' Level examinations from Mulama SSS in Nakaseke are Hebert Wanyina, David Ssali, Asuman Sebunnya and Bitijuma Njogedde.
Others are Samalie Nayiga, Prossie Nakayiwa, Wilfred Nanyonjo, Janet Sekabira and John Baptist Kalyango.
"From next semester, the above students should finance their university education. The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education should ensure that their scholarships are cancelled," Mwondha said.
"The students uttered false information regarding their origin. They did not meet the stipulated requirements because they do not come from Nakaseke."
According to the IGG, Ndawula used a forged local council stamp on the students' recommendation letters. "Ndawula is at the centre of the fraud."
The IGG recommended that Ndawula's teachers' registration certificate be cancelled and his name be struck off the payroll for engaging in 'high level fraud'.

Mwondha's investigation into the matter followed complaints from residents about the beneficiaries of the district quota scholarships.
