THE works ministry is to asses the state of 24 bridges across the country. The exercise, expected to begin in June, would pave way for repairing the structures which are old.

The engineer in charge of bridges, Aloysius Orach, said on Monday that the contractor would soon be appointed. Four companies, which merged with foreign firms, have already submitted proposals, he explained but did not disclose the names of the companies.

"They will study the bridges, identify the defects and offer solutions. The proposals are being evaluated," Orach said, adding that the process would take about two weeks.

Orach and the ministry's chief engineer, Samson Bagonza, were inspecting a bridge at Mpondwe on the Uganda-DR Congo border that collapsed in mid April.

It runs over River Rhubiriha and is a vital link for trade between the two countries.

Others are Katonga-Mpigi, Kazinga Channel-Kasese, Awoja-Soroti, Pakwach-Nebbi, Karuma-Gulu, Kafu-Masindi-Nyamugashani, Manafwa-Mbale, Ngalumwenda-Mbarara, Malaba-Tororo, Muzizi-Kabarole.
