South Korean farmers in collaboration with the Niger state Government have concluded arrangements to invest $2.5 million on rice production in the state. The permanent secretary Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Health, Engr. Abdullahi Aliyu, disclosed this in Minna yesterday at a press briefing on the state government's intervention programmes on rice production, marketing and processing.

Aliyu explained that the Korean farmers who are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the state government next week, would further boost the rice production capacity of the state. He stated that in view of the looming global food crisis, the state government has initiated some programmes to boost the production of food crops, with emphasis on rice production.

According to him, "Niger State has enormous potentials for rice production in the country due to its abundant fadama lands and water bodies such as rivers, streams and dams. "The available flood plains if harnessed for both rain fed and irrigated rice cultivation, can feed the nation with surplus for exportation," he further said. The permanent secretary said to boost the production and quality of rice grown in the state, the government has directed the ministry of agriculture and commerce to take an inventory of all rice co-operative farmers groups involved in production, processing and marketing of the commodity.
