A 29-year-old Nigerian, Peter Eke, was found dead in Arjun Nagar near Safdarjung Enclave in south west Delhi on Monday evening. A case of murder has been registered at a police station.

The police received a call from residents who reported that Eke had been seen lying in one of the lanes in Arjun Nagar. They rushed him to Safdarjung hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Eke's body bore abrasions marks and there were wounds on his abdomen, chest and head.

According to Times of India Eke had been staying in a rented accommodation in the area, along with a female friend, for the past nine months.

The Indian police are investigating the possibility of Peter being involved in illegal activity in India.

"So far, his stay in India has not been proved as there has been no documents found related to his stay. We have informed the embassy and are seeking their help to find out more details," said a senior police officer.

He added that the motive behind the murder was not clear but that they were also looking at the possibility of a brawl with someone in the area.

"There are reports that Peter had a fight with some of the locals. It is possible that he was beaten up by the same people. We are trying to identify them," said another officer.
