PRESIDENT Mwanawasa's participation in next month's Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) will play a significant role in attracting investment to Zambia, Japanese ambassador to Zambia, Hideto Mitamura, has said.

Mr Mitamura said in an interview in Lusaka that Dr Mwanawasa's participation with other African heads of State would also strengthen the existing bilateral agreements between Zambia and Japan.

He said Zambia should also use the TICAD meeting to sell the country's rich cultural and tourism sectors, which he observed still needed foreign investment.

Mr Mitamura said Japan would also help to promote Zambia's vast potential in sectors such as tourism to other countries.

He said the Japanese government was happy that President Mwanawasa would lead a team to attend the conference and that it was through such important gatherings that Zambia and Japan could share information.

Mr Mitamura said Japan had been monitoring Zambia's economic performance and the way the Government was working to ensure that it improved the conditions of living of its people by reducing poverty.

He said Japan was interested in ensuring that Zambia attained its goals of development in various sectors of the economy for the benefit of the Zambian people.

"Zambia still has untapped investment opportunities which is the reason why we want to join Zambia in marketing the country because of the peace and unity it has continued to maintain," he said.

He said in the past Japan had contributed to Zambia's development through the construction of schools and roads.
