Zambia: Economic Empowerment Vital for Workers - State

14 May 2008

Ndola — THE Government has called for economic empowerment of workers to enhance productivity and national development.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kabinga Pande said in Lusaka yesterday that the awarding of hardworking employees should be an on-going exercise as economic empowerment and social justice were important components of the life of workers.

Speaking during the 2008 Labour Day Awards presentation ceremony for his ministry, Mr Pande said workers only increased their productivity when employers encouraged and motivated them through the provision of good incentives.

This year, 30 employees had been recognised as compared to 2007 when the ministry awarded 11 employees. Among the recipients were Judy Nanyangwe and Tomson Phiri who both received a 21 inch television set and K350,000 each as they were among the longest serving employees.

The most hard working employees included Doreen Monde and Humphrey Mulenga who both received double bed mattresses and K350,000 each. The most honest employees were the minister's secretary, Ceddah Nakanyika and Kabuyi Mporokoso who both received fridges and K350,000 each.

The most improved employees Helen Zulu and Patson Chulu received a four plate cooker and K350,000 each.
