Tempers flared during yesterday's Taifa cup match between Kagera and Ruvuma players at the national Stadium in Dar es Salaam as seen above. The teams tied at 2-2 in regulation time as the Lake side team sent Ruvuma packing by 4-2 in shootouts.

Kagera regional soccer team yesterday cruised into the quarter finals of this year's edition of Taifa Cup after beating Ruvuma by 4-2 in penalties.

The two teams ended the regulation time in a 2-2 deadlock in a match played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Kagera has booked a quarter final clash against Arusha that on Monday sent Iringa packing.

The winners started the match in an explosive pace as striker Musa Ngunda scored as early as the third minute when he connected home a pin point pass off Shamte Ali.

After a see saw affair, Ruvuma's Abdallah Ausi pulled an equaliser in the 31st minutes when he intercepted a throw ball by custodain Oddo Nombo.

As half time drew closer, Kagera's Paul Ngwai was on target for his side to restore his team's lead by beating Ruvuma defenders' poor off side trap.

Ruvuma took the second half impressively searching for an equaliser.

Their relentless efforts paid off in the 69th minutes when Omar Kapilima made full use of a goal mouth melee to slot home the all imporatnt goal for his team to go level.

The teams launched several attacks but none of managed to break the deadlock.

Temper flared close to the end of the match as Kagera's Paul Kabange punched Ruvuma's Pastor Chawinga for referee Oden Mbaga to flash a red card at the 90th minute.

The match entered into a penalty shootouts that worked in favour of the lake side team as Ruvuma players fluffed their shots.

Only Ramadhan Kudunda and Chawinga converted their penalties for Ruvuma.

Id Ajiro and Abdallah Ausi missed their penalties.

It was relatively easy task for Kagera as their penalty takers, David Charles, Martin Muganyizi, Juma Seif and Yahya Kani scored with ease.

Ruvuma's Chiwinga emerged the man of the match to take home Sh50,000.

Today, Ilala will play against Mwanza at the same venue as Morogoro meet Coast Region on Thursday.
