Nairobi — The annual Dyer and Blair golf tournament will feature professional players for the first time. The tournament, marking its fifth year, will be held at Muthaiga Golf Club this weekend.
A purse of Sh100,000 has been set aside for the professional players, courtesy of Dyer and Blair chairman Jimnah Mbaru. The professionals will play two rounds from Friday and will be joined by more than 200 Muthaiga members on Saturday. Over 16 prizes will be up for grabs by the amateurs.
Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) tournament director Elisha Kasuku thanked Dyer and Blair for including the local professionals. "We deeply appreciate Dyer and Blair's support and we look forward for a continued co-operation" said Kasuku.
At least 20 professionals had entered the tournament by Tuesday.
They include new professional Ken Abuto, one of the finest players in the country.
Abuto, of Royal Nairobi Golf Club, turned professional last month after being left out of the national team that travelled to Ndola, Zambia for the Africa Zone Six Championship though he had qualified to be in the team.
A winner of three Golfer Of The Year (GOTY) titles last year, Abuto finished 110th during this year's Tusker Kenya Open at Karen with rounds of 77 and 74.
Also listed to play is Mombasa-based Charles Yu, who turned professional soon after the Kenya Open in March followed by Thika's Simon Ngige and David Wakhu. The three made their debut in the professional ranks during the second leg of the KCB Pro-Am Tour in Kisumu last month.
Also in action at Muthaiga will be Mumias Sugar-sponsored Dismas Indiza and the PGK chairman Charan Thethy.
The two flew home this week from Swaziland, where they took part in the Royal Swazi Sun Open. However, missing this weekend's action will be South Africa-based Anil Shah, who qualified to play in the Nashua Challenge at Sun City's Gary Player Country Club in South Africa.
Dyer and Blair plan other events at Royal Nairobi and at Nyali Golf and Country Club.
