Nairobi — Kenya Prisons, the Africa women's volleyball club champions, are among the 23 teams that will take part in the East and Central Africa volleyball championships.
Nairobi will host the championships from May 29 to June 1 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Jacob Owiti, the regional volleyball governing body, ECAVCO's secretary general, said arrangements to accommodate all the 23 men and women's clubs were complete.
The competition has attracted 13 men and 10 women's clubs.
Kenya's General Service Unit (men) and Kenya Pipeline (women) are the regional champions and will be keen to defend their titles, especially after performing badly in the Africa competition.
GSU were clobbered in Tripoli and had to settle for sixth slot while Kenya Pipeline could not even raise a team to challenge for the honours in Cairo, where Kenya Prisons triumphed in their maiden appearance at continental level.
Kenya will be represented by nine clubs - GSU, Kenya Commercial Bank, Kenya Prisons, Telkom, Homegrown and Forest Rangers (men). Two-time Africa bronze medallists KCB, Kenya Prisons and Pipeline will carry the women's hopes.
Tanzania will send four clubs - Jeshi Stars, Magereza, both men and women. Burundi has entered Muzinga men side, Les As and Colombes women's teams.
Rwanda will be represented by APR (men), Rwanda University (men and women) while Uganda will send four clubs - Kampala City Council and Nkumba University (men and women).
Nkumba University women will be making their second show outside Uganda after finishing eighth in Cairo ahead of Mafolofolo of Botswana.
Owiti said the technical meeting for the coaches would be held on May 28, where the drawing of lots will be conducted to seed the teams and put them into groups. All the foreign teams are expected in Nairobi by May 28.
