Tunisia: Local Writer And Scholar Abdelmajid El Houssi Dies At 66

Tunis — The Ministry of Culture and Heritage Preservation has announced on Sunday the death of the Tunisian writer and scholar Abdelmajid El Houssi at the age of 66.

The announcement also mentions that Mr El Houssi was an intellectual and an eminent man of letters part of Tunisia's intellectual elite abroad , where he was the holder of the French Linguistics Chair at the University of Ca' Foscari in Venice, Italy.

He is the author of several essays, short stories, novels and collections of poetry, apart from his academic production relevant to his area of specialization.

Mr El Houssi was also well- known as a supporter of the dialogue between civilizations, as well as for his spirit of tolerance and commitment and his initiatives aiming at promoting Tunisian culture and Arab- Islamic thought in Europe .

He was the recipient of Tunisia 's highest literary prizes, the "Comar d'Or" in the year 2000, for his novel, "Voices in the crossing", as well as many other prizes in France and Italy .

He gave his last conference at the new National Library in Tunis , on the theme: "The voyage: the space of dialogue and respect in the Mediterranean ". The conference showed the breadth of his enlightened thought and his commitment for opening up on the Other.
