THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday said any candidate caught using mobile phones or any other communication gadgets at the forth coming University Matriculation Examination (UME) would be charged with exam malpractices and handed over to the police.

The Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Professor Adedibu Ojerinde in a briefing in Abuja said that the use of mobile phones or any other communication gadgets is prohibited in and around the examination halls.

He revealed that the board decided to ban the use of handsets in the examination halls because candidates were using them to communicate with examination malpractice syndicates outside the halls with the active connivance of some supervisors and invigilators.

"Any candidate found with telecommunication gadgets during the examination would be deemed to have engaged in examination malpractice and made to face the full weight of the provisions of Examination Malpractice Act No. 33 of 1999.

"Despite similar warning, no fewer than 100 mobile phone handsets were recovered from candidates in various examination centres in the country last year," he noted.

To further enhance a credible and successful examination, Professor Ojerinde disclosed that JAMB has enlisted the services of a private security outfit to complement its internal security to effectively monitor the examinations.

Besides, he added that the board having discovered that the major problem in the conduct of the matriculation examinations has been the activities of some supervisors and invigilators who encouraged malpractice in examination, has placed a monitoring device in each of the exam centres to stop the supervisors from carrying out their nefarious acts.

A total of one million and fifty four thousand and forty three (1,054,043) Candidates are expected to sit for the forthcoming UME billed to hold on Saturday May 17th 2008.
