Nigeria: Uduaghan Swears in Council Chairmen

AMIDST the barrage of complaints from opposition parties, Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday went ahead to swear in newly elected Chairmen who were declared winners at last Saturday's local government polls by the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC).

The governor however advised contestants aggrieved over the election to seek redress at the Tribunal rather than threatening fire and brimstone as his administration would not succumb to any threat to peace and security of the state, which is one of its three-point agenda.

Chairman of the DSIEC, Justice Samuel Jaho (rtd) in releasing the official results announced that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all the 25 local government chairmanship seats, except in Ughelli South local government, which was yet to be declared.

In the same vein, the governor called on the new local government chairmen to extend their hands of fellowship to the opponents from other political parties, noting that such unity engeander the much need peace in the council areas.

His words: "I want to appeal to our local government chairmen that your first assignment is to extend the hand of fellowship to those who contested with you, that were not favoured enough to occupy that position no matter the party.

"Let me also advise those that did not make it at this election, please there is still another phase of the election and that is the tribunal; there is no need trying to be violent there is no need resulting to harm. If you are sincerely very aggrieved, you still have another chance at the tribunal level", he stated.
