Ecobank has commend ed the Lagos State Government for organizing Nigeria 's first ever National Conference on Public Transportation.

Answering questions from the media during the national conference, the bank's Head of Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr. Peary Idornigie said that financing public transportation through the public/ private sector partnership is the key to sustainable development in that sector.

He stressed that sustaining financing from the private sector entails strong collaboration between all parties in a transparent manner, noting that stakeholders should also emphasize on the development of the human resource need of these partnerships.

Mr. Idornigie maintained that the bank is challenged to contribute substantially to the growth of the Nigerian economy, hence its support for the Lagos Bus Rapid Transport Scheme (BRT) through financing of the purchase of buses.

For him, Ecobank believes it can support government initiative at providing convenient transportation system for a larger mass of the people, as the BRT scheme will go a long way in ameliorating the transport stress associated with life in Lagos .

The National Conference with the theme, Integrated Transport System in Nigeria's Emerging Megacities: Issues, Challenges and Options, was put together by the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) to chart the way forward for sustainable transport system for the country.

The three-day conference which had participants from both the public and private sectors of the economy, as well as international non-governmental agencies tried to articulate new ways at ensuring adequate funds for the development of public transportation in Nigeria.
