Nigeria: Akinwande Stages Comeback Bid

14 May 2008

Lagos — The countdown is on, towards another Nigerian boxer emerging as champion on the world stage in the heavyweight class, after the feats of Samuel Peter, with ex-champion, Henry Akinwande now staging a big comeback.

The former WBO champion declared in an exclusive chat with brilafm.net that he is determined to make his way back to the international circuit.

The former protégé of Don King will be 43 years in October but is not ready to quit just yet. Instead, Akinwande revealed that his plan is to first get the European title which would launch him for a shot at the world belt, then call it quit by the end of 2009.

"I have been there before and I am back to claim my place. I have already signed on for my big fight on July 4, and it will be a big night of boxing.

"My fight is on the undercard of three other big fights, and I stand to meet the winner of the major fight of the night.

"It's like an elimination process, and they actually lined me up for the same night, so that I can meet the winner sometime later," Akinwande explained.

He went on to disclose what went wrong between him and his former promoter, Don King, saying they did not share the same aspirations.

"It was just a case of Don King being a business man and was more interested in making money over everything else," the acclaimed tallest boxing champion ever teased.
