Kigali

Today, Dr Yves Sahinguvu, the Burundian Vice President, visited the Kigali Memorial Centre with a delegation of senior Burundian government officials, RNA has established.

In a press conference in front of the main entrance, the Vice President noted: "We have just concluded a visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre, which is my third; every time I am in Rwanda I have to come and pay tribute to the innocent victims of the genocide. The exhibition demonstrates clearly how an education of hatred that was introduced and championed for years led to a horrible genocide and up to this day we are living with its consequences".

"We have orphans and widows that are living in extreme poverty; there are people living with HIV AIDS as a result of genocide. Now we need to come together and combine efforts as nations to prevent genocide from happening again. This quest cannot be a concern of just one country; it's the responsibility of the whole of humanity", he added.

Asked about the security issue in Burundi which was recently worsened by attacks from the FNL, he said: "It is not the first time that the FNL is undermining the peace agreement process by carrying out attacks here and there on a civilian population which in itself is a horrible violation of the Geneva convention, but the position of the Burundian Government remains firm and clear; we will continue to protect the integrity of the country and the safety of the Burundian people while at the same time being open to negotiations".

"We have always been flexible to discussions because we believe that is the most sustainable option to bringing peace and stability. But, like I said, it's our responsibility to protect our sovereignty and we are determined to do that. It's now up to the FNL to determine what they really want because so far we have met their demands and have always invited them to the discussion table.", he said.
