Kitgum District councillors have petitioned the Ministry of Local Government seeking removal of the speaker, Ms Sarah Akongo Obalim, over a wide range of allegations against her.

Several councillors Daily Monitor talked to said at least 23 out of 36 councillors have signed a petition which raised three grounds on which they want Ms Obalim removed.

They accused her of incompetence, abuse of office and mismanaging council affairs.

"From the time she was elected speaker, she has never steered council affairs as expected.

If the chairman district council has not been able to perform to the expectations, it is because of her persistent mismanagement of council affairs," the LC5 councillor for Madi Opei, Mr Mathew Ocen Akia said.

Copies of the petition were reportedly sent three weeks ago. Ms Obalim, however, said she was is doing her work and some people simply want her out.
