Police in Masaka have arrested a man believed to have killed a boda boda operator and attempted to take his motorcycle.

Mr Bonny Mukasa, 19, a car washer at Kinoni Town in Masaka District was paraded before the press last Friday at Masaka Police Station. Another suspect with whom he allegedly committed the crime is still at large and police did not disclose his names.

"We have his names and have located areas where we can get him," Masaka Regional Police Commander Andrew Sorowen said. "We are about to get him." It is alleged that Mr Bonny Mukasa and another person (unnamed) hired the services of the late Richard Kawesi, 24, who was a boda boda operator based at Barclays Stage in Masaka Town on March 24 2008 at about 10.00 pm.

They allegedly instructed him to take them to Mutesa I Royal University and he is said to have complied. But shortly before they got to the University at Kirumba in Masaka Municipality, they reportedly ordered him to stop and get off the bike. They allegedly told him to give them his bike.

When Mr Kawesi resisted, one of the two suspects drew a sword and thrust it into his back before the two took off with the bike, a TVS registration number UDG 558P. Kawesi shouted for help and a chase by fellow boda boda operators ensued forcing the two suspects to abandon the bike and run into the bush.

The boda boda cyclists caught Mr Mukasa but his friend escaped. They were about to burn him with petrol when police arrived and rescued him. Mr Kawesi was rushed to the nearby Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where he died after about an hour.

Mr Sorowen said Mr Mukasa had confessed to participating in the criminal act and that he has been very helpful to police in its investigations. "We have to take him to court where we will charge him with murder and aggravated robbery," he said.
