Kampala — Pastor William Muwanguzi alias Kiwedde of Holy Fire Church in Namulanda was released on Tuesday from Katwe Police Station on police bond.

The "man of God" had been arrested at the American Embassy in connection with the disappearance of a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to Mr Michael Sango.

The Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Department at Katwe Police Station, Mr Sisye Kiirya, said: "We released Pastor Muwanguzi on Tuesday (May 13) evening and ordered him to report on Friday. Of course he told us that the car is in Congo but we told him to come with it."

The pastor's release came after he underwent three hours interrogation at Katwe Police Station.

While at the station, the pastor admitted to having taken the car but said that it was driven by his wife, Jane Namatovu to the DR Congo where she was going to attend her father's funeral.

"After receiving the car, I got an urgent journey to Congo but I used another car and the Land Cruiser V8 was driven by my wife and it got spoilt from there. So I had come for spare parts. Its computer and fuel pump got spoilt," the pastor told Daily Monitor in an interview yesterday.

The pastor's arrest followed a vigorous police search in Kampala. Pastor Muwanguzi had a car worth Sh5m which he wanted to give to Mr Sango and add Sh19 million as top up money to make a total of Sh24 million.

A broker got Mr Sango's car on April 11 and gave it to the pastor on condition that within two days he would have brought his car plus the top up money.

Meanwhile, it was all tense in Namulanda yesterday at the Holy Fire Church led by Pastor Muwanguzi.

Some of his followers now fear to be associated with him because they feel that he has soiled their church and the whole Born-again community.

Before the car saga befell the pastor, the church used to be full of worshippers from morning up to late in the night because of the strong belief they had in him.

By the time Daily Monitor team visited the church yesterday at 2 pm, the place was calm, without the music that usually characterises the church could not be heard.

The pastor looked exhausted and he declined to talk to journalists accusing them of blowing the story of his arrest out of proportion.
